Sunshine Says 5/30/2012
Sunshine,
I see a few pictures of you at the beach. I want to take my dog with me to Florida, but I'm worried that she'll get too hot. How do you stay cool, and what do you hook your leash to once you're there?
We went to the beach for the first time last year. It was SO MUCH FUN! Mommy put me on this really long leash and I chased tennis balls in the waves. I was hopping around everywhere in the ocean. We went to the Dewey Greyhounds Reach the Beach so there were greyhounds everywhere! We went to watch the sun come up one morning and it was cold! Mommy had to zipper up her coat around me to stop me from shivering.
Some non greyhound puppies weren't on a leash but they were all very well mannered and none of them came up and scared me. After playing the the ocean I rolled around in the sand and dug myself a nice comfy sleepy hole. We all took a nap, even Mommy. Mommy just switched us back to the shorter leashes and slip knoted them around her arm while we all slept.
Our Aunt Sarah had brought a beach umbrella for shade since it was hot even in October. We only stayed on the beach for a few hours, but I don't think it would be too much fun if it was hotter outside.
Maybe make sure your pup cools off in the ocean before sleeping in the sand for a short while so they don't get too hot? It's fun if you pay attention. If your puppy starts to pant then it's time to go play in the ocean again or go back home to the noisy machine that makes it nice and cold inside.
It's fun to go places and do new things but that bright thing in the sky can makes us sick very quickly so be careful! I'm always sad when we go places and I see puppies that are tired and hot while their humans have no clue...
Have fun at the beach and make sure you take pictures!

Our vet trip update
We went to the vet yesterday.
http://www.greenfieldsveterinary.com/Templates/BLOCKS.aspx
We see Dr Beyer who is the most greyhound savvy vet I have ever seen! I
thought I was at a greyhound vet before and was very mistaken. She has
Sunshine chemically worked out and rapidly on her way to normal within 6
months. I regret the years of anxiety before when I could have had her
fixed quicker. Stupid Mom mistake that I am trying to not make again!
We did bloodwork on Rainy to see if anything will show up there that might
cause an increase in her startling to certain noises. Dr Beyer actually
brought up a good point. Rainy might have picked this up through the years
of 'helping' Sunshine be less scared. She wants to start her on the same
dose of Amatriptalyn that Sunshine is on (makes it so much easier on me)
and check back with us in 3 months to see how she is doing.
I should hear back on Wednesday about the bloodwork, but Dr Beyer isn't
expecting anything there. She commented on how nice their coats, teeth,
ears, weight, body condition, all are. Last time we were there I was able
to just toss out a casual “oh we don't brush teeth...” and she dropped it
at that. This time she was wiser and asked directly what I do for their
teeth. I asked her if she wanted the PC answer or the real one! LOL Told
her that we feed raw and are very anal and careful about balancing the
diets and not feeding unsafe bones for their chewing style, etc. I said
that we have had vets tell us that we are killing the dogs, etc. Dr Beyer
said that the bones sometimes do wonders for cleaning teeth and if it's
working to keep doing it. I get the idea she's not had any experience with
a raw diet, but she didn't lecture us! Said that since Rainy is already 8
years old and her teeth are so good that she may NEVER need a dental in her
life! Makes my wallet happy!
So we started Rainy on the meds last night and she's a little more whiny
and a lot more hungry already! I remember when we first started Sunshine
she was obsessively eating anything that would fit into her mouth and we
were going through a giant Costco size restaurant can of green beans every
3 days just to try and keep her belly feeling full for her. Guess I better
go buy some green beans on Tuesday!. Gonna be a long month of side
effects.....

Sunshine Says 5/23/2012
Dear Miss Sunshine
Styx, (Italian Greyhound, 11 lbs) asks, "Why am I not allowed to crawl under the fence to get at the 90 lb German Shepard mix in the next yard?"
Styx,
Your doing it wrong! Never go under the fence, you have to go over it! It sounds like your tiny so you need to really practice hard on jumping. Some dogs can climb over but the most reliable way is to build up those jumping muscles. So start practicing on the kitchen counters, on the tall trash cans, on people, kids, kitchen tables, backs of couches, windows, doors, etc Use anything you can think of. If the humans start yelling they are just in awe of your dedication!
Just think how happy that german shepard friend will be once you fly in from above! It's a perfect plan! Let me know how it goes and good luck!

Opinions needed?
I'm still conflicted! Sorry this is so long
Rainy became part of our family when she was 4 years old. She just turned 8 last month. She has a 2/6 - 3/6 heart murmur and some environmental/diet related allergies. other than that she is as healthy as a horse. Loves her walks, meeting people, going to new places, chasing a lure pole, running in the yard, etc.
She's always been an unflappable rock in every situation. She 100% helped our nervous half spooky second pup that we brought home. I've had her at gun ranges, lived in questionable areas where gun shots, car backfiring, and fireworks were a typical occurrence in the ghetto.
Last July 4th we were traveling and the neighbors started shooting off fireworks and she freaked! Ironically my shy little girl was 100% calm and fine. The year before the dogs were in a n Xpen when the neighbors started shooting off a 12 gauge and we all just lounged eating string cheese. So a loud noise in that area isn't a new thing. It was so bad that I had to leash her inside because I thought she would go through a window. We spent hours on a bed leashed up and she just shook and shook and shook and panted. Chalked that up to a weird incident and moved on.
When we got back home she would spook and shake at any loud noise that happened outside. We were still living the ghetto and it was a common occurrence. She eventually with time and melatonin got a little better.
Then we moved! Both dogs had 0 adjustment period to the new place and walked in loving it. We travel just about every weekend 9 months of a year so both girls are very travel savvy .
Our new fireplace crackling sends Rainy into a panic. She howls, yips, pants, freaks out, etc. I've tried giving her some of the shy one's Xanax and it doesn't react well with her. She still gets freaked only is too drunk to maneuver around safely.
It's been a year since this has started. Friday night they were both in the outdoor dog kennel at the campground and someone started shooting off fireworks and she freaked. Didn't yip/howl for too long but panted paced and was bug eyed for well over an hour after the last bang went off. These are not loud noise occurrences that I can plan around.
Add in that about 6 months ago she started getting bug eyed and panting frantically in the car. We travel often and she has always panted and stood but it's been more excited rather than panicked. She now needs extra encourage ment and focusing to get her to jump into the car. She tries to avoid it, so she is not enjoying our car rides anymore.
We have a vet app on Saturday. I've tried using venison to help her overcome her fear of the crackling fireplace and I've gotten mixed results. She will be ok one day then loose her mind the next it seems. My gut says that I should probably talk to the vet about some medication for her... I'm big on having well adjusted socialized relaxed dogs. Anxiety is a horrible thing to have to deal with every day.
Then in the back of my mind there is a voice going "You already have 1 dog on meds for the rest of her life most likely, am *I* causing this somehow"
Am I crazy? Any suggestions on what I should tell the vet? I'm planning on having bloodwork done with some thyroid checking. Should we explore some anxiety meds? Or give it more time to see if she straightens out? It's already been almost a year... Is this a normal part of aging for some greyhounds? She sure doesn't act old...

My dream kitchen
Will have this as the back splash thing. Me, bored in Home Depot is dangerous!
Those sinks in that dept are like bathtubs! They are deep enough and big enough to wash a greyhound in.

Saturday Sunshine advice
Always trust your instincts. Leap first and deal with the consequences later! Live with no fear and always have fun.
We are fishing today and Sunshine is having the time of her life, even while being yelled at every few minutes. She is going to crash tonight. As long as we can keep the fish hooks out of her mouth we will all survive. She reeeeeeaaaaallllyy wants to eat those fish though. Maybe they will squeak like stuffies?

Sunshine Says 5/16/2012
Dear Miss Sunshine,
Tommy, (male Greyhound 72 lbs) wants to know why Styx (male Iggy 11 lbs), has a bigger "Hoo Ha" than he!
Tommy,
You of all pups should know that tiny dogs are SCARY! I mean are they even really dogs? And why are they so loud and mean? They always are angry and yelling at me! All you can do is try not to piss them off. Approach them like they are ebil kitties. Maybe they are actually related to them... Just be very very careful with those tiny dogs/demons.
Last week he had a tiny dog some stay with us. He was terrifying! He was tiny, wiggly, and hard to hold. He got away from Mommy for a tiny bit and he chased me upstairs and into the bedroom. Being so little he couldn't jump up on the big bed so I was safe there. I love being so smart!
Stay safe my friend!
