When my relatives visit me, they always get upset that I feed my Greyhounds before preparing the human meals. I like to get the dogs' dinner out of the way so we can relax and socialize while we eat, besides, they're used to getting their meals at a regular time!
I don't intend to change the way I do things, but I'd like to explain it in a way that they would accept a little better -- right now, I think it's a competition for "who I value most .. family or dogs". Silly family!

Well Unknown, this can be a very serious subject. First off you need to post this poem on your front door. Make sure those mean ol relatives see it and read it!
Dogs Live Here
My dog and I live in this house. You are welcome to come and visit me anytime but we have a few things that you must understand before you visit:
You must expect a few dog hairs to stick to your clothes. I vacuum and clean on a regular basis, but a Dog lives in this house too.
You may be licked and given a paw a few times but he does this because he loves people and wants to say "Hello", so if you feel that you are too good for his love then you may not feel welcome here because this is his home too.
My dog is well mannered and very clean but if you are one of those people who think ALL animals are dirty and smelly then you and I will probably have difficulty feeling comfortable during your visit.
If you don't like the sound of barking, then my home is not likely to be a pleasant place for you. My dog protects me by letting me know I have a visitor. Whether it be a friend or uninvited stranger. If you are a friend, my dog will consider you his friend too but if you are an unwelcome guest, my dog will protect me with his life as I would his.
Do not expect me to lock my dog in another room during your visit. I have trained my dog well so he will not do anything to you except maybe want a pat on the head. I will not subject him to feel as if he is being punished by locking him away for no reason. That would just be cruel.
When you walk in my home, be careful not to trip on a squeaky toy or a bone. These are my dog's little treasures and I will not take them away from him just to show you that I keep a clean house. He knows where all his toys are. They may not look like much to you, but to him, they are worth more than gold.
You see, This is OUR home. We have been together for a long time. I raised him into a well mannered, beautifully behaved dog. I am proud of him.
So please understand that I am not being rude. I'm just looking out for my best friend.

After they understand that the next part should be easy! There are some people who think they the humans should always eat first to show the dogs "who's boss" Those are the same humans that just don't understand that the ebil kitties rule the universe.
Here's what my Mommy does on the weekdays. She comes home from work and BF has already let us outside to potty and play for a bit. She comes in puts her lunch stuff on the kitchen counter after jumping around and saying hello to all of us. Next she pulls some food out of the fridge or freezer for us and puts it in a bowl of warm water so it can thaw out a little bit.
Then she feeds the fishies and kitties, goes upstairs to get into comfy clothes while I show her how big I can stretch out on the big bed. Sometimes I will get her to cuddle with me for a minute. After that we race reallyreallyreally fast downstairs and we get our medicine, then our supper! While we eat she usually sits on the sofa and asks BF what he wants to do about their dinner. We get their leftovers as our dessert! Yum!
We are very happy that our mommy does this. Puppy noses are so sensitive that we can actually taste what we smell! If we had empty bellies and had to smell and watch everyone else eat it would be torture! Maybe if you tell that to those relatives they will understand? Sometimes if we have guests over, Mommy even gives us a chewy bone to eat while they are eating the human dinner. That way we go to our dog beds and happily crunch away. Those nights we get supper, a chewy bone, AND the human leftovers for dessert. Ah what a happy belly...
Sometimes with the really bad (not naughty like me) puppies they need to be reminded who is boss and should always eat last. But those are the puppies that are biting people and are really scary. Us houndies just have big toofers that like to relax and fall out when we sleep. If anyone tries to tell my Mommy what she should do with us she gets really mad really fast, so I think your being very nice to those other humans.
Sometimes we eat dinner really late if we are traveling or out doing stuff. We've gotten home at midnight before! We ate dinner and went rightawayquick to bed that time. If we have to wait that long for dinner Mommy always gives us some extra nummies throughout the day so our bellies don't hurt.
Hope this helps teach those other people da rulez! Let me know if they ever understand.
Sunshine
