My fireplace is ugly! I've always hated it but didn't know how to fix it until I found this tutorial.
I took the ugly brass part off and spray painted it outside with spray paint made for high temp grills. Then I white washed the bricks by rubbing them with a cloth and some watered down white paint.
Came out very nicely!
