Foster Friday: Nero

Nero is a 2 yr old galgo that flew in from Spain this past Tuesday! He was a bounce from a shelter over in Spain and he was not happy about being back into kennel life. Sighthound Underground was able to bring him over here to give him another shot at that forever home!

He is one of the easiest fosters! He's smart and snugly. Not really that energetic for a 2 yr old. His sole purpose in life is to find a human and snuggle. He knows how to Sit and Give a paw along with Stay. He's going to be a pup that bonds quickly and thoroughly with his new family.  It's impossible not to fall in love with him!

Breed? Galgo
Gender? Male
Altered? Yes! and I haven't even thought about trying to hump my foster sisters. I am a gentleman.
Age? 2yrs
Potty trained? Yes! There *might* have been an incident where I peed on a wall my first night here... but it hasn't happened again! I've gained my freedom from the belly band!


Crate trained? Yes, but I'm not too happy in there... I sing off and on. Foster Mom leaves a radio on for me and I like that!
Cat safe? Why won't they play with me? Their hissing is more than a little scary.
Dog friendly? Of course! I love friends!
Kid friendly? They have hands and bodies. They can pet and snuggle! I love them!
Fence jumper? Foster Mom has a 6 ft privacy fence and I haven't tried to go over that. I do keep looking at the top though. Geesh I'm just looking! No needs for her to loudly yell...
Happy as an only dog? As long as I have a Mommy or Daddy I would be fine! I do like the other dogs for company, but am pretty confident on my own.
Any meds? (other than HW & Frontline) Nope! Just flea and tick stuffs!
Any other quirks? I'm cute and snugly! I'm not happy unless I'm laying on someone or touching in some way. If you need a cuddle buddy I am your guy! I have no space issues


Favorite treat? Anything! Haven't found any food that I don't like. Have nice firm poops too!
Favorite pup food? Right now I'm eating the Natures Domain turkey and sweet potato. It's the costco red bag stuff
Favorite human food? Cashews, peanut butter, chicken, basically everything I have tasted so far! I love American food!
Do you like to chew? I like to nibble on stuffies, but haven't destroyed any.
Favorite chewy? I haven't had a chewey yet. I did have a greenie yesterday. It was my payment for being a brave boy with the dremel.
Do you like pedicures? I wasn't lounging on the couch like my foster sisters, but foster mom could do my toes all by herself.
How do you feel about the couch? As long as there is a human to snuggle they are the best!



Do you prefer snuggling or your own giant bed? Snuggle!!! I'm a lap galgo ya know
Favorite naughty thing to do? Jump up! I'm tigger! I also give hugs. I don't try to knock anyone over so foster mom can't decide whether to hollar at me or just accept my hugs and love on me.



How fast do you zoomie? Not as fast as my foster sisters. There are too many smells to stop and sniff.



What’s your opinion on squirrels? Haven't seen one yet. I bet I would have fun chasing them...



Opinion on birds? Do they really taste like chicken? Oh I like chicken! Where are these birds? When can I get one?
Are you a guard dog at the front door? Or a sleeping laid back pup? Laid back pup! The only time I've barked was when the neighbor dog was saying bad stuff about us through the fence. Foster Mom says he's aggressive and we just have be big kids and IGNORE him! Silly lady doesn't know I could kick his butt through the fence.
Do you like long walks? Right now I get tired after a mile. My paws have to toughen up some more.



How important is your sleep? Only third to food and snuggles!
Who is your favorite puppy friend? Sunshine! She plays with me in the backyard.
Do you like to travel? I'm an excellent car traveler! After being on a couple airplanes, traveling is nothing!



Where did you travel from? Spain! Pups there don't have many good chances at homes. Be careful googling... It's not good for us galgos over there.
Any interesting travel stories? American Airlines said they couldn't fly me and my friends last minute. So SHUG had to pay for other tickets and fly us on another airplane a few hours later. We were scared at the airport thinking we wouldn't get our trip to America!
What do you think of strangers? What's a stranger? Do they snuggle? Can they pet me?
Favorite toys? This little stuffed piggy of Sunshine's. She's a very good foster sister and lets me play with it.



What’s your favorite game to play? Watch me climb and worm my way closer to you with every breath...
Opinion on belly rubs? Rubs anywhere please! I'm not picky



Do you yell at your humans for anything? To get out of the crate. Foster Mom says maybe my forever home won't have to crate me. I sure hope they just snuggle with me all day every day.
Do you marinate your brains to make them smarter? (sleeping upside down with head off bed or furniture) Sometimes... I do like roaching every once in a while.

Foster Friday: Baxter

Baxter is our very own superstar this week! His foster Mommy is actually Sunshine's foster Mommy! We have it on excellent authority that he has one of the best foster Mommies out there. ;) This cute little snuggle bug looks so adorable! Seems pretty low maintenance on the medical front too. Who's going to take this munchkin home and spoil him rotten? He's a tiny little collector! How cute is that?

 

Foster Name? Baxter. I like to play
Breed? Chihuahua, who likes to play
Gender? Male
Altered? Yes, but that doesn't stop me from playing.
Age? About two years.
Litter trained? I'm still learning house training, so I wear a belly band, that I like to grab and play tug-of-war with when foster mom puts it on me. But I don't pee in my crate.
Crate trained?Yes, where I like to play with my foster brother. And I sleep with him in the crate, too. Or as many as can fit. (see photo - that's me on the right , the handsome red boy)

Cat safe? Of course! Who needs cats when there are lots of toys to play with!
Dog friendly? Yes! Big dogs and little dogs. I love to play with the other little dogs.
Kid friendly? Don't know about kids, but if they'll play with me, I'm sure I'll like them a lot.
Outside door darter? No, not really.
Happy as an only dog? No. I need to have other little dogs around me so I can play and sleep with them.
Any meds? (other than HW & Frontline) Nope.
Any other quirks? I don't think it's a quirk, but I only have 3 and one-half legs. You see, I was rescued from a puppy mill/backyard breeder and something happened to my rear leg and it was amputated at the knee. It sure doesn't slow me down any and I can still play and run and wrestle and everything.

So I guess my only real “quirk” is that I'm still sort of afraid of hands even though I love people and I'm always happy. And playful. I love my foster mom and will run up to her, touch her hand, then run away. But I come to her when she calls me and I will let her put on my belly band (and take it off when I go outside). But that is all normal for puppy mill dogs. I'm still happy and playful all the time and I love life.

Message from Foster Mom: Baxter/Dexter (because of his red hair) is a happy, playful little guy. It's cute to see him running around the house with dirty laundry, toys, shoes, or anything else he thinks is interesting. But he never chews anything up! Just carries stuff around the house. Baxter is not at all intimidated by the big dogs, but really loves being with the little ones. He definitely needs to go to a home with at least one other little dog who will cuddle and play with him.

Baxter is quiet, not a all “yappy”, and will immediately drop or stop whatever he shouldn't be doing with a gentle “no”. He crates quietly and sleeps throughout the night (with his little foster brother) without a sound. Because of his puppy mill background, it takes a little while for him to get used to new people and their hands. Most puppy mill dogs are afraid of hands, either because they weren't socialized as puppies or because “hands” were never nice to them. But Baxter loves people and is always happy. Happy. Happy. He would probably make an excellent service or therapy dog because of his loving nature and because his lack of a leg doesn't stop him from anything. Including playing.

Foster Friday: Tinkerbelle

This is an in-memory foster dog post. As soon as I originally created this post back in August, I was advised that the Blind Dog Rescue Alliance had decided to make Tinkerbelle as a sanctuary pup who would live her life out as a spoiled princess in her perfect foster home.  

The next plan was to turn this post into a please donate to help support Tinkerbelle's ongoing medical bills. Unfortunately little Miss Tinkerbelle was called to the rainbow bridge before I was able to get this done. 

I sat on this post trying to figure out what I should do with it.... I finally decided to use it as a celebration of Tinkerbelle's life and to showcase how the Blind Dog Rescue Alliance rocks! They took this little girl and for over a year spared no medical expense in making sure she was healthy and comfortable.

This little one is gorgeous! Just imagine how silky that fur must feel... The Blind Dog Rescue took her in back in August of 2012 when her owner passed away. This little girl doesn't let life get her down. Anyone who has ever had an older dog knows just how special they are <3



Foster Dog’s Name? Tinker aka Tinkerbelle

Breed? mini schnauzer
Gender? female
Altered? yes
Age? 13-15 years old



Potty trained? used to be, but now has many accidents
Crate trained? NO!!! She panics in a crate. She has a soft sided crib that she will go in, but doesn't like
Cat safe? Yes, her best friend is a 1 year old female kitten
Dog friendly? Yes. But tends to be nervous and curious
Kid friendly? Yes, but VERY timid. Will like the love once she is assured they are dog friendly



Fence jumper? BaHaHaHa..... NO, Tinker moves at the speed of a snail going uphill backward.
Happy as an only dog? Haven't tried. She has always had at least one other dog with her. (even in her forever home until the owner died)
Any meds? (other than HW & Frontline) Yes, Tinker has eye moisture drops, ointment. and INSULIN twice a day on a VERY strict schedule



 

Any other quirks? Being Tinker is a quirk. She is a timid, but sure dog. She will jump on the couch and back off with ease, but will NOT go down steps. She walks very slowly, but has taken off running if the mood strikes her. She whines while waiting for her food, and will occasionally shout (bark a shrill bark) if she thinks I am not fast enough. She is very loving and wants to be near her human, but only on her terms.

Level of sight? Almost total blindness. Tinker likely sees shadows at times, but other times sees nothing.



Favorite treat? NONE!!!! Screws her insulin levels up
Favorite pup food? Only food allowed is prescription W/D for diabetics. Eats one can at 7am and 7pm
Favorite human food? Again, NONE


Do you like to chew? BOL, No, Tinker has one canine tooth (no other teeth) and that one is loose.

Favorite chewy? but she has a stuffed kitten that is about as big as she is that she likes to cuddle and lay her head on at night



Do you like pedicures? No
How do you feel about the couch? Tinker feels the couch is open territory and she should have all access to it at all times
Do you prefer snuggling or your own giant bed? Laying on the bare floor on her kitten
Favorite naughty thing to do? Pee and Poop in the kitchen



How fast do you zoomie? Um, Not knowing exactly what that means, I guess I should say that an elderly person with a walker could likely pass Tinker in a race.
What’s your opinion on squirrels? Don't see them, so don't care about them.
Opinion on birds? Do they really taste like chicken? Same as squirrels



Are you a guard dog at the front door? Or a sleeping laid back pup? Totally chill
Do you like long walks? No, but I have a path around the parking lot that I insist on walking - unless someone is setting fire crackers - then I RUN home
How important is your sleep? I live to sleep



Who is your favorite puppy friend? Robin, is a toddler puppy I live with and we wrestle sometimes. but my bestie is Izzy, the one year old kitten. She hides and I seek. I love that kitten and the games we play

Do you like to travel? Yes, even to the vet. But I am a bit nervous and will stand in the seat for a long time
Where did you travel from? I used to live with a man who died, so the rescue took me in and helped me get in a healthier shape. I was in Sarasota, Fl and now am in Tampa, FL. Only about an hour away.



Any interesting travel stories? Not really, but I go with my foster mom sometimes to get gas or something
What do you think of strangers? Once I know they are friendly and won't bite, I think their hands make very nice massage tools
Favorite toys? My kitten!!!

Foster Friday: Rusty

Today's superstar is Rusty!!! He actually spend a couple days at our house last year. I can attest that he acts pretty darn normal for a sight impaired pup! Rusty has been in foster care for a looooong time. He came from a very high kill shelter in NY. When BDRA picked him up the two dogs on either side of him were fighting through the fence and poor Rusty was terrified.  Please help us find him the most perfect home! He's in NJ right now, but he can travel anywhere to his perfect home! He deserves his very own family.

What do you think of strangers?  I am shy at first and like to stand back and size up if they are nice. Once my person talks to them, I am excited to have new friends.



Favorite toys?  Toys?!!  Anything is good if you can throw it for me or it squeeks!!  I really like a rubber pig that snorts.... I snort it a LOT when I am alone in the dark of my crate. It keeps me company

Age? Somewhere around 8 years -- never ask a female to tell her age.
Potty trained? Yes
Crate trained? Yes, but I prefer to be with my humans
Cat safe? Yes
Dog friendly? For the most part. I really don’t like hyper dogs, especially puppies. I tend to growl when other dogs come into my face or butt. I prefer the calmer dog who minds their manners until I warm up, then I am ok.
Kid friendly? I think I like children. I do not live with any but when I go to out to visit, walk or dog events, I do allow children to pet me, especially belly rubs.



Fence jumper? No, are you kidding, not lady like.
Happy as an only dog? Absolutely!! I would be as long as my human spoils me!!
Any meds? (other than HW & Frontline) Only artificial tears 2x a day.
Any other quirks? I eat slowly. I’m quite calm, just want to be with my humans.
Level of sight? I don’t have my left eye anymore. My right eye has a mature cataract and I have limited vision.



Favorite treat? milk bone
Favorite pup food? Right now I eat Verus kibble mixed with water.
Favorite human food? Probably chicken, healthier.
Do you like to chew? Only on toys and bones.
Favorite chewy? Tennis ball
Do you like pedicures? Doesn’t bother me, just use a natural polish.
How do you feel about the couch? I love the couch, especially when you ask me to join you.
Do you prefer snuggling or your own giant bed? I can do both, just let me know what you prefer.



Favorite naughty thing to do? I don’t like hyper dogs, especially puppies, so I growl to let them know to stay away. I knock it off when told, but I really prefer the calmer laid back dogs that we each respect each other’s individual space.
How fast do you zoomie? Are you kidding??? I am a slow poke, unless going for a walk, car ride, or its breakfast and dinner time --- then I must hurry to get there.
What’s your opinion on squirrels? What’s a squirrel?
Opinion on birds? Do they really taste like chicken? What’s a bird? Chicken, did you cook chicken? Can I have some for a snack?



Are you a guard dog at the front door? Or a sleeping laid back pup? Not really a guard dog, but I do have a set of vocal cords on me.
Do you like long walks? I like to walk.
How important is your sleep? Somewhat.
Who is your favorite puppy friend? Not sure, I live with 7 dogs so there is enough to go around, but I like my brothers who know not to engage in play.
Do you like to travel? Oh, yes!!!! I am very good at it.
Where did you travel from? Arkansas to Pennsylvania
Any interesting travel stories? Not really. I hate to brag. My travel was a long 2 day trip.



What do you think of strangers? They are okay, especially if they give me belly rubs.
Favorite toys? Tennis ball – I know, I’m not a golden retriever.
What’s your favorite game to play? I’m too mature to play games.
Opinion on belly rubs? The more the merrier, and if you prefer, we can do belly rubs all day long.
Do you yell at your humans for anything? No, not really. If I want some of what you’re eating, I do put my paw on your leg.
Do you marinate your brains to make them smarter? (sleeping upside down with head off bed or furniture) No. I never learned that trick.
